Launch Party

March 11, 2024 @ 18:00 – 21:00

Michael Ward’s book – Unceasing war on poverty: Beatrice and Sidney Webb and their world, published by the Conrad Press, written with the support of the Webb Memorial Trust is the first full biography of both Beatrice and Sidney for forty years.
Soho is an interesting place to celebrate the Webbs. Sidney was born in 1859 on Cranbourne Street – about 300 yards from this evening’s pub – the family home was over the hairdressing salon run by his mother.
And it was in Soho, in 1883, that Beatrice began her work as a social activist and researcher, joining the local committee of the Charity Organisation Society (COS). Before long, she had fallen out with the COS, calling them my friend the enemy. But in the 1880s she thought visiting poor people in their homes gave her an experience of life which is novel and interesting.
