Born in the 1850s\, they came from very different backgrounds. They married in 1892 – but only after Beatrice had previously experienced a long\, unhappy relationship. Their fifty-year partnership produced books and reports rather than children. Many of the reforms the Webbs demanded were enacted after their deaths. The hated Poor Law was abolished\, and a National Health Service was established\, transforming millions of lives. Michael Ward’s fascinating book details their methods: meticulous research\, private persuasion and hospitality\, barnstorming public campaigning\, and hard political organisation. They created and shaped institutions – the Fabian Society\, the London School of Economics\, and the ‘New Statesman’ – which flourish to this day. Their work is central to understanding change in twentieth century British politics and society.

DESCRIPTION:Michael Ward’s book – Unceasing war on poverty: Beatrice and Sidney Webb and their world\, published by the Conrad Press\, written with the support of the Webb Memorial Trust is the first full biography of both Beatrice and Sidney for forty years.Soho is an interesting place to celebrate the Webbs. Sidney was born in 1859 on Cranbourne Street – about 300 yards from this evening’s pub – the family home was over the hairdressing salon run by his mother.And it was in Soho\, in 1883\, that Beatrice began her work as a social activist and researcher\, joining the local committee of the Charity Organisation Society (COS). Before long\, she had fallen out with the COS\, calling them my friend the enemy. DESCRIPTION:Michael Ward\, who once worked in local Government and as CEO of the London Development Agency\, and Jane Winter (see her session on March 8) have each written biographies based on reforming figures who lived through the first half of the twentieth century and many of whose interests overlapped. They will discuss aspects of Michael’s book Unceasing war on poverty; Beatrice and Sidney Webb and their World\, ( hopefully copies will be available). Also they will consider some of the commonalities of political and social values shown by their central subjects in connections to movements like the Cambridge Fabians\, the Neo-Pagans\, and to the Bloomsbury set. Many of these values are once more under debate and attack today.
